Time Lapse

earth science review page

Time lapse opens up a a whole new way to look at the world and can be a great teaching tool.  Here's a semi-random collection of some really good time lapse videos.

Picture
TL:  "Awake" Northern Lights [Alexis Coram]:  An amazing video of one of earth's most awe-inspiring phenomena. A must see video.
3 mins

The time lapse made me want to see the Northern Lights in real time.  Alexis has a video of that too - also very cool. Click here or on the photo below.

VIDEO: Real time Aurora Borealis
Picture
Supercells, Thunderstorm & Tornado Time Lapse Compilation:  Mesmorizing.  The time lapse of the T-storms is particularly striking.

5 mins
Picture
Sand Dune Migration Time Lapse:  Mesmerizing to see dunes move like this in the time lapse sections.  The meat of this video starts at 2:30.  The low resolution detracts from it a bit, but this video is still pretty awesome.

Picture
TL:  Foucault Pendulum [Science Center of Iowa]:  Good video of a Foucault Pendulum over 24 hrs.
50 sec
Picture
A Year of Sunrises: This dude took a sunrise photo every day for a year and strung them together.  Pretty amazing project and a great tool for teaching sunrise locations.
23 secs
And here's a longer one he did consisting of almost 6 YEARS of sunrises.  Man, this guy is dedicated.
Picture
24hr Time Lapse of Sun's Motion in Antarctica: Well-done video from filmmaker Anthony Powell, who directed "Antartica: A Year on Ice".  It's interesting to note that almost everything about the sun's motion is opposite what it would be in the northern hemisphere - it moves right-to-left (though still east-to-west) and is due north at noon and due south at midnight.

Solar Eclipse Time Lapse -Australia 2012:  The fact that you can see the sweeping shadow cast by the moon blows my mind. Wow! A must watch video.
1 min
Picture
Lunar Eclipse Time Lapse:  Compressing 4 hours into 2 minutes, this video is high quality and very cool.
2 mins

Here's a different lunar eclipse (though not as good) on YouTube if Vimeo is blocked by your school as it is in mine (grrrr...)
Picture
Solar Eclipse 2012 - Australia:  This has high quality production and a lot to like.  But I don't like the switch in rate of time lapse around the time of totality. Still very good though.

Picture
Fundy Tides:  Decent voice-over accompanies 9 quality time lapses of the tides located in the Bay of Fundy.
3 mins 20 secs
Picture
Tides - Halls Harbour Times Lapse #1:  Great time lapse video showing the dramatic Bay of Fundy tides.  Particularly useful when paired with its "sister" video (#2)
30 secs

And here's a real-time webcam of this same dock.
Picture
Spring Tides - Halls Harbour Time Lapse #2:  Compare the water level at high tide during this spring tide with the other Halls Harbour video - it's about a 6 foot difference!  Man, I love these 2 videos.
30 secs

Picture
Flooding Time Lapse [Illinois River 2013]:  Time lapse of a whopping 11 days, showing the river rising and then subsiding.  Not the best visual vantage point, but still cool.
3 mins
Picture
Capillary Action Time Lapse [Gazdonian Productions]:   Capillary action definitely looks pretty cool in time lapse.
1 min 25 sec

I also have a version that is just the raw footage without commentary for presenting NGSS phenomena.

Picture
Volcanic Eruption Time Lapse of Eyjallajo Eruption 2010: Time lapse offers a cool perspective on volcanic eruptions.  Love the name of this volcano.  The Icelandic language is awesome...
30 secs

Picture
Sun's Shadow Time Lapse [MisterGazda]:  Shadow length and direction is notoriously challenging for students to get.  This is a GP time lapse video I filmed in my driveway over 7 hours one summer afternoon.
1 min 20 sec
Picture
Surface Area and Evaporation of Water [MisterGazda]: A basic concept but the time lapse really makes in noticeable

2 min 09 sec

Picture
Halite Dissolving Time Lapse [Gazdonian Productions]:  Straight forward but cool to see.
1 min 24 sec

Picture
Glacier Time Lapse (various) [Chasing Ice Documentary]:  Some great time lapses in this along with some real-time footage of ice calving.  Footage compiled from the documentary Chasing Ice.  Students really think this is cool.
5 min 06 sec

Picture
One Year Time Lapse of Glacial Retreat in Chile [djxatlanta]:  Great time lapse showing glacial movement.
1 min 03 sec

Picture
Glacier Time Lapse, Alaska 2004:  Very good time lapse showing glacial movement (the link skips the first 2 mins of the video and takes you right to the time lapse).  Audio:  I like Tom Petty as much as the next guy but the music is distracting on this.
30 sec

Picture
Time Lapse of May 2018 Hawaii Lava Flow [Live Storms Media]:
34 sec

Picture
Vine Growing Time Lapse [ultraguitarist]:  Seeing the (annoying) wild vines growing on my fence lead me to search out this video.  I've always wondered how they did that...Very cool.
