Videos

Picture
Infrared Radiation: Produced by NASA, this is great as an introduction to radiation.  A student favorite.

Arctic Summer 7-day Time Lapse: Students are always very interested in places that get 24 hrs of sunlight.  (note:  I question whether there's some trickery with the filming here as the video appears to be looped in parts.  Still really good for the getting the point across with a class though).

A Year of Sunrises: This dude took a sunrise photo every day for a year and strung them together.  Pretty amazing project and a great tool for teaching sunrise locations.

And here's a longer one he did consisting of almost 6 YEARS of sunrises.  Man, this guy is dedicated.

Picture
Convection Currents (in water):  My favorite video showing convection currents.  The music will drive you crazy after a while, so turn it down or off.  Trust me.

24hr Time Lapse of Sun's Motion in Antarctica: Well-done video from filmmaker Anthony Powell, who directed "Antartica: A Year on Ice".  It's interesting to note that almost everything about the sun's motion is opposite what it would be in the northern hemisphere - it moves right-to-left (though still east-to-west) and is due north at noon and due south at midnight.

Harvard Graduates Don't Know What Causes the Seasons:  This classic clip shows that even Harvard graduates still harbor the age-old misconception about the cause of the seasons.  Great to show in class to bring attention to this misconception.

"Why is the sky blue" / "Why are sunsets red?"  Straight forward explanations.

Time Lapse: Sun's Shadow:  Shadow length and direction is notoriously challenging for my students.  This is a GP time lapse video I filmed in my driveway over 7 hours one summer afternoon.
1 min 20 sec
Picture
Convection Current Box:  The classic convection current demonstration using the air flow box and glass tubes.  Serviceable.

Sun Directly Overhead at Solar Noon [alhauber]  Cool to see this for people who don't live in the tropics.

2nd String Videos - a bit more on the fringe of the topic

Picture
"Survivorman" Talks about Arctic Summer: A clip of Les Stroud talking about what it's like to be in the arctic with 24hrs of sunlight on The Joe Rogan Podcast.  Students love this kind of stuff.
1 min 50 sec
Picture
Sunset Time Lapses:  When teaching seasons, there's great value in actually showing the sun move across the sky.  And time lapse is the way to do that.  These 3 sunsets in this video are a good starting point.

Animations/Simulations - the ability to show motion is huge.  These are great teaching aids.  Be sure to click around and click-and-drag on stuff, as these are pretty interactive.

Picture
Sun's Path Simulator:  A fantastic tool for teaching the sun's path from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  I just wish you could full screen the animation  because it's less than 1/2 the screen size.  Other than that, great job UNL
[note:  this is very interactive in that you can click and drag on the diagram to change perspective.  A nice feature for sure]
Picture
"Union Season" Demonstrator:  Shows the sun's altitude diagram alongside time-lapse style photographs of the real world.    A great way to help students visualize and relate to how the sun's height at noon changes during the year.[click-and-drag available on the sun's path diagram]
Picture
Paths of the Sun Simulator:  a stripped down, basic version of the Sun's Path Simulator.  Perhaps start with this one and move up to the SPS [click and drag on diagram to change perspective].

Picture
Sun's Rays Simulator: Very simple and basic, but is still better than even the best diagrams I use in class to teach this.
Picture
Seasons Simulator:  Shows 3 views of Earth-Sun simultaneously.  Very good.  Run it and/or click-and-drag on earth.

Here's the complete list of all  125+ (!) University of Nebraska-Lincoln Astronomy animations.  Check these out for sure.

Lecture note videos - not super-exciting but very functional to relay the basics

Picture
Seasons Notes [metfan869]
Quality straight-forward lecture notes.  Some nice visuals in here.  Geared toward NY Regents Earth Science courses.

Sun's Path [metfan869]:  Thorough with very good visuals.  This is a tough topic for students and the visuals really help.

Labs/Classroom Activities

Picture
Sun's Path/Seasons Lab [GazdonianProductions]:  I was not happy with the standard lab for this, I came up with this one.  This is an quick overview to help teachers who may want to make their own version.

Sun's Movement & Shadows Lab [GazdonianProductions]:  Wanting to make seasons and Sun's motion more hands-on, I developed this lab station where students manipulate 3 work lights and relate them to the sun's path. This particular station has been a "teachable  moment machine" for me, as I've spent so much time  over the years standing at this station with students discussing this scenario with them.  Highly recommended.
