Erosion

earth science review page

Videos note: this page still under construction

Picture
Rock Fall [yosemitenationalpark]: Part of the Yosemite Nature Notes series, this is a very well-put together video. Has great slo-mo footage of a big rock fall from 2009.  A really good video all around.
 8 mins.
Picture
Why Rivers Curve [Minute Earth]: Very good explanation using mostly drawings.
3 mins

Picture
How it Happens - Mudslides [NY Times]:  Straight forward explanation of mudslides
2 mins

Picture
Sand Dune Migration Time Lapse [cvchandler]:  Mesmerizing to see dunes move like this in the time lapse sections.  The meat of this video starts at 2:30.  Unfortunately it's hampered by the low resolution.
6 mins
Picture
Time Lapse: Illinois River 2013 Flooding [it360inc]:  Time lapse of a whopping 11 days, showing the river rising and then subsiding.  Not the best visual vantage point, but still cool.
3 mins
Picture
River Sediment Transport with an Underwater Camera [hightideexp]:  Being able to actually show sediment being moved by a stream adds so much to lessons on erosion, deposition, or sedimentary rocks.  Students are more interested in this video than I thought they'd be, which is always a great surprise.
2 min 24 sec

And here's another good one. (Sacramento River)

Picture
Underwater Footage: Sediment & Wave Action [Ken Mankoff]:  Clearly shows sediment movement due to waves action and how abrasion occurs.
 3 mins.
Picture
River Meanders & Oxbow Lakes Explained:  This looks to be a clip of an educational film from the 1980s.  Not reach-out-and-grab -you exciting, but it gets the job done.  Some good aerial footage.

2 mins
Picture
Flood Drone Footage, Mississippi River 2016:  Great quality footage showing the significant extent of flooding of Cape Girardeau, MO.
3 mins

Picture
Glacial Striations [Gazdonian Productions]:  Low budget GP video I filmed of glacial striations at Opus 40 Sculpture Park in Saugerties, NY.  Everyone loves the bug on the lens.
3 1/2 mins

Picture
Why Deltas Form [Minute Earth]:  The hand drawings really help convey a lot about delta formation.
2 1/2 mins

Picture
Sperry Glacier, Glacier National Park, Montana [Seth Horowitz]:  This is exactly what I want the internet for:  video by an earth science teacher standing directly on a moraine.  This is what I mean by bringing the real world into your classroom.
2 mins

Picture
Alaskan Glaciers [Jim Brewer]:  You can't teach glaciers without actually showing real glaciers, and this video is good for that.  It shows simple aerial footage of valley glaciers in Prince William Sound in Alaska.  A bit long so you may want to skip forward a bit.  What's up with the music dude?
7 mins
Picture
Vertical Sorting / Graded Bedding [MisterGazda]:  Straight forward video showing the formation of graded bedding.
3 min 36 sec

Picture
Big Sur Highway 1 Landslide May 2017 [Brian Mack]:  Cool aerial footage of this dramatic landslide
52 sec

Picture
Glacier Time Lapse (various) [Chasing Ice Documentary]:  Some great time lapses in this along with some real-time footage of ice calving.  Footage compiled from the documentary Chasing Ice.  Students really think this is cool.
5 min 06 sec

Picture
One Year Time Lapse of Glacial Retreat in Chile [djxatlanta]:  Great time lapse showing glacial movement.
1 min 03 sec

Picture
Glacier Time Lapse, Alaska 2004:  Very good time lapse showing glacial movement (the link skips the first 2 mins of the video and takes you right to the time lapse).  Audio:  I like Tom Petty as much as the next guy but the music is distracting on this.
30 sec

more videos to come...

Simulations/Animations

Picture
Phet Glacier Simulation [U of Colorado-Boulder]:  Pretty good simulation of mountain glaciers.  Shows the conveyor-belt type transportation of sediment that can form a terminal moraine, which I've always had trouble showing class.  And you can place flag markers on the glacier surface as well as make drill holes to show the slower basal movement.
Picture
Follow a Drop of Water into Lake Champlain [3D Water]:  Very cool flyover type simulation of a river flowing through westward across Vermont into Lake Champlain. Created by a team at UC Davis specifically for educators.
Though slick looking the site is a bit clunky, but they have simulations for Crater Lake and Lake Tahoe too. 3dh2o.org

Miscellaneous

Picture
So Much to Learn About the Oceans From Sand (NY Times): Article about a study on sand erosion/deposition.  The article is OK, but check out the accompanying audio slideshow and especially the interactive feature that shows varying sand types around the world entitled The World, Grain by Grain. Jan 2009

Click here to check out Rob Holman's sand collection page on the U of Oregon's Coastal Imaging Lab page.  The site is clunky, but click on The CIL Sand Collection, then find the "CIL Sand Quiz".  Not very user friendly but it has some great close ups of sand and brief comments on each.
