Sun-Earth-Moon

Earth Science Review Page

Videos note:  this page is still under construction

Picture
Solar Eclipse Time Lapse -Australia 2012:  The fact that you can see the sweeping shadow cast by the moon blows my mind. Wow! A must watch video.
1 min
Picture
Lunar Eclipse Time Lapse:  Compressing 4 hours into 2 minutes, this video is high quality and very cool.
2 mins

Here's a different lunar eclipse (though not as good) on YouTube if Vimeo is blocked by your school as it is in mine (grrrr...)
Picture
Solar and Lunar Eclipses Explained [Vox]:  A great, multi-faceted overview of eclipses.  This video has it all in regards to eclipses.  Great visuals.

 47 sec

Picture
Tides - Bay of Fundy Time Lapse:  The tides are no joke up there. This is a good intro, before showing the fantastic Halls Harbour videos.
1 min 20 sec
Picture
Tides - Halls Harbour Times Lapse #1:  Great time lapse video showing the dramatic Bay of Fundy tides.  Particularly useful when paired with its "sister" video (#2)
30 secs

And here's a real-time webcam of this same dock.
Picture
Spring Tides - Halls Harbour Time Lapse #2:  Compare the water level at high tide during this spring tide with the other Halls Harbour video - it's about a 6 foot difference!  Man, I love these 2 videos.
30 secs
Picture
Fundy Tides:  Decent voice-over accompanies 9 quality time lapses of the tides located in the Bay of Fundy.
3 mins 20 secs
Picture
Solar Eclipse Turkey 2006 [Exploratorium]:  Shows many facets of this total solar eclipse in a news story type fashion. Very good.
2 min 20 sec
Picture
TL:  Foucault Pendulum [Science Center of Iowa]:  Good video of a Foucault Pendulum over 24 hrs.
50 sec

Picture
Solar Eclipse 2012 - Australia:  This has high quality production and a lot to like.  But I don't like the switch in rate of time lapse around the time of totality. Still very good though.
1 min
Picture
First Moon Walk 1969:  If you teach kids about the Moon you have to show Neil Armstrong take that "one small step" and the astronauts plant the flag on the Moon's surface.  This is it.  [Side note:  I love how the NASA guys in the control room are all wearing white short sleeve dress shirts - so indicative of the era...]
1 min 44 sec
Picture
TL:  "Awake" Northern Lights [Alexis Coram]:  An amazing video of one of earth's most awe-inspiring phenomena. A must see video.
3 mins

The time lapse made me want to see the Northern Lights in real time.  Luckily Alexis has a video of that too - also  very cool. Click here or on the photo below.
Picture
VIDEO: Real time Aurora Borealis

The Second String:   On the fringe of the topic.  But still cool.

Picture
Astronauts Bunny-Hopping on the Moon:  Kids are always very interested in gravitational differences in space.  This shows that hopping is preferred over walking on the moon.  50 secs
Picture
NASA Tour of the Moon:  Great footage of the moon's surface.  Very cool.

4 min 40 sec

Animations/Simulations

Picture
Moon Phase Simulator (UNL):  Great way to show moon phases.  Very comprehensive and has nice interactive features.
Picture
Tidal Bulge Simulator (UNL): Pretty basic but serviceable.  I wish the sun's effect on tides was shown separately with a different color perhaps.
Picture
Moon Phases Using Bisectors (UNL):  Really good to be able to manipulate the orientations of the earth and moon.  Way better than the traditional static diagrams.
Picture
2017 USA Solar Eclipse:  Zoomable map of the path of this eclipse.  Squirrelled away toward the bottom is a link to a simple animation of the shadow moving across the US, which is cool (though small.)

animation here
Picture
2024 USA Solar Eclipse: Zoomable map of the path of this eclipse.

Animation of the path of shadow here

Picture
Eclipses - Moon's Tilted Ecliptic (UNL):  Kids always ask the good question, "Why don't we have an eclipse every month?"  Use this to show why we don't.
