video channels and series

This site is still under construction.

Series: Yosemite Nature Notes:  Extremely well done series on many aspects of Yosemite National Park. Over 25 episodes, though many are focused on the biological world.  The Frazil Ice episode is always big hit with my students.  Also "Granite", "Horsetail Falls".

TED Talks by Topic:  There's a LOT of TED Talks.  I need to go through these and pick out the ones that are good for teaching.  But for now here's the list of topics for you to browse.  TED talks can often be on the blowhard part of the spectrum, but the good ones are really good.  For instance I show this one about life in the deep ocean, which students love:  Underwater Astonishments by David Gallo

New York Times - Science [Playlist]:  The NY Times videos are well done and are usually less than 6 minutes.  It's really nice that all the science videos are compiled in one place. Over 100 in all videos in all.

Series: Earth Revealed Professionally done series focused on California, this has very much a 1980s educational video series vibe to it. Which means drone-like voice over, Muzak-y audio fillers, and interviews with science professionals who are probably not the life of any party. But look past that and there's a lot of good information here that's well presented. Unfortunately the video quality is lacking. 26 episodes half- hour episodes.
Note: the videos stream at learner.org. Click on the VoD icon to watch.
Harvard Museum of Natural History: Some good plate tectonics and paleontology videos among the 96 videos on this channel.
Youtube Channel:  Minute Earth  Quick, packed lessons on many Earth Science based topics.

Educator Channels: There are a number of people out there creating some great videos for students.  And I have to think the number and quality will only increase over time.

YouTube Channel: CV Shorey

The channel of Colorado School of Mines Professor Christian Shorey is the definitive YouTube Geology lecture channel.  His Earth Exploration Series consists of over 50 videos that are basically mini college-level lectures packed with tons of great visuals.    Don't let his monotone-ish voice or the low-frills production values fool you - these videos are extremely informative and well put-together.  Great stuff.

note:  The precursor to this YouTube channel is Shorey's 65 episode Earth and Environmental Systems podcast.  Stream them here, or find them in iTunes here. Episode 38 "Energy Resources" is particularly good.

Youtube Channel: HugeFloods  Hosted by Nick Zentner from Central Washington University, these are very well done geology videos focused on Washington State and the surrounding area.  Great location shots.  Most videos less than 5 minutes with a  few between 15-20 mins.
