The Subway Garnet (NY Times) Background on a fantastic garnet crystal found in 1885 when excavating the NYC subway.  Dec 2015

Behind a Shopping Center in New Jersey, Signs of a Mass Extinction (NY Times) Fossil site from K-T boundary that's open to the public. Jan 2016

Why Icicles Look the Way They Do (NY Times) The physics of icicles. Mar 2015

So Much to Learn About the Oceans From Sand (NY Times Jan 2009): Article about a study on sand erosion/deposition.  The article is OK, but check out the accompanying audio slideshow and especially the interactive feature that shows varying sand types around the world entitled The World, Grain by Grain.

When Trilobites Ruled the World (NY Times Mar 2014):  Includes a very cool graphic of 50 different genera of trilobites.

Jellyfish Horde Uncovered After Half a Billion Years (NY Times 2002):  Interesting discovery of jellyfish fossils in Wisconsin.  Good explanation of the series of events that lead to the formation of these fossils.

''It gives you a kind of aura of standing in this instant in time,'' Mr. Damrow said. ''You're standing right on that beach just as it formed.''

Tornado Sirens, an Old Technology, Still Play a Vital Role (NY Times May 2016):  Interesting article, especially for those who have never lived with tornado sirens as part of their lives.  Definitely check out the videos that accompany the article.
Picture
The World's Disappearing Sand (NY Times June 2016).  A good Op-Ed piece about sand as a natural resource and its global depletion.  I don't know how serious this threat really is, but I think students would find this article interesting and eye-opening on some level, since pretty much no one thinks about sand as a valued natural resource.
Picture
World's Oldest Fossils Found in Greenland (NY Times Aug 31, 2016):  Discusses the discovery of stromatolite fossils on Greenland estimated to be 3.7 billion years old.  Quality article that touches on very early Earth, the Moon, meteor impacts, fossils and the origin of life on Earth.
