The good grades, AP classes, respecting his elders - all that’s well and good I guess. But when the grizzled skate dude says he likes Danny’s style, that’s a cause for some serious parental pride.

Steamboat Springs. Our Airbnb here is a ski condo. Very different from where we stayed in Buena Vista, but it’s good in a different way. When we arrived back from dinner, I heard live music coming from the main Lodge building. Always wanting to catch some live music, I headed up there. I was just following the source of the sound which led me to some weird dead ends within the sprawling main building. I finally made my way outside to the large pool side area. I thought it would be a “Thursday night live music“ series the ski mountain puts on. I quickly realized it was some sort of private event. I went into “act cool and do your best to fit in” mode. Before I even had a chance to survey the scene I heard the lead singer announce “Thanks to Superior Livestock for having us!” Then I noticed the sea of cowboy hats and comically large belt buckles. And here I am wearing shorts, a t-shirt with an obscure Phish reference and a Thrasher baseball hat. Shit, I have a plastic belt buckle for christsakes (not proud of that fact.). This “fitting in” isn’t gonna be easy… The band’s next song was The Devil Went Down to Georgia. While I very much did not want to hear this song, I have to give credit to the band for their reading-the-crowd skills. I ended up talking to the photo booth guy for 10 minutes. Of course I did... First stop in CO after our early morning flight ( direct flight! A rare thing from Albany airport) was breakfast at Snooze. It’s just the 3 of us on trip since Katie is staying up in Burlington this summer working and taking Organic Chem. I’m really glad she’s up there doing her thing but we miss her on this trip. I think this guy has very much misconstrued my motivation behind making this T-shirt. But hey, a sale is a sale… I figured this is appropriate with graduation happening today. I was one of the last people in the high school on the last day of school 3 years ago(the end of the freshmen year for those graduating tonight). I took this photo outside my old room (now Grigg's room) in an eerily darkened hallway .
I haven't seen this photo since then until it popped up in my memories on FB this week. I thought it would work well on the "liminal spaces" photo group on FB. I've thought about posting some of my photos to photo groups in the past but never did, mainly because I didn't want them to get 3 measly likes and be basically ignored. Everyone will always tell you to power through failures and dissappointments (myself included - and I mean it!) but honestly, it's tiring to see things you believe in continually fall flat. It wears on you. Despite this, I posted it to liminal space anyway and immediately didn't think much of it. 3 hours later I got a notification that it had a whole bunch of likes and a handful of positive comments. I wanted to share it here because it's Chatham related, but now with it being graduation day maybe there's a message here about pushing on? You'll have to decide for yourself. The ELL students I've had as students over the course of my career have been very nice, respectful and hard working - I've always rooted for them. But they fall through the cracks in the world of public education, so I've focused my attention ways to help ELL kids. One way has been promoting the use of the YouTube translation feature. But YouTube would only translate as subtitles - a problem for students who don't read their own langauge fluently. A new YouTube feature is audio translations, which is really cool. I've been waiting years for this feature, so this is exciting. Here's a sample video. |
