Chronic absenteeism is certainly a huge issue in schools, however student's circumstances should also be taken into account. Every educator would like to believe that school is a student's number one priority, however that is not always the case. What I have seen is many students have problems at home or other stress. For me, I was absent long term due to bullying that was not properly addressed - I doubt that I am the only one with that story.

You are probably right, however that more and more students are becoming lazy and trying to ignore compulsory education requirements in order to spend time with friends or online. A lot of influences on children nowadays - especially technology - are dangerous and are potentially harmful to our future generations.
I just hope that by the time I am teaching, this issue gets better, not worse!

It's a big issue. The question that needs to be asked is: Why is absenteeism so much higher now than let's say 30 or 40 years ago? Kids had issues at home back then also.

You are right. I really blame the use of technology for a lot of it, too...
